- # 9 (Day 16) Helena nearly makes the ultimate sacrifice
In Detective Comics #74, Helena stands defiant and alone against The Joker as she tries to prevent him from kidnapping Gotham’s youngest and most vulnerable residents: babies.
Helena ends up paying a price for her perceived transgression against The Clown Prince of Crime.
Despite the fact that her efforts to prevent the madmen from kidnapping the children were rendered futile, her heroism shines through as a pillar of humanity during the city’s darkest hour.
And her defiance is worthy of praise, as she still refuses to succumb, even as her blood transmogrifies the snow.
Her heroism is even acknowledged by the other heroes in Gotham, despite their mistreatment of her. She’s even rewarded for her actions with a kiss by Dick Grayson.
Encapsulated in these scenes are Helena’s most resiliant traits: bravery, defiance, selflessness, sacrifice, and compassion. It’s everything I love about the woman captured in one place, and it’s why I’m proud to call myself a fan.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it once again, but this is truly Helena Bertinelli’s finest hour.
